Assessment in Adult Education
Learning emphasis on assessments in education formulates formative assessments through the andragogy system in education.
In adult education, andragogy education has responded to the formative assessment suitably. This method offers the choice of attending discussions and interacting with peers, sharing knowledge, and developing experiences and knowledge. In Adult education, learners mostly come from different backgrounds and tend to be responsible for their education (Hammons & Hui, 2014, p. 4). The andragogy along with the support of technology would transfer the responsibility of learning from teacher-oriented to student-centered learning methods.
Dr. Hatti (2015) expressed that if we teach our students to see themselves as their teacher and evaluator of themselves is the key to leading them to formative learning assessment. The student-oriented method encourages students to think critically, discuss topics, be responsible for self-assessment, reflect and transfer knowledge. In the formative assessment, according to William (2011), educators can categorize the education journey into three steps. “monitoring (whether learning is taking place?); “diagnosis (what is not...learned?); and “action (what to do about it?)” to identify the learning has taken place and enables teachers to adjust their method accordingly (as cited in Ahmed et al., 2019, p. 111). This method leverages realizing the gaps between the learned knowledge level and the standards of learning in higher education. The formative learning assessment constructs the current knowledge as the basis for another education and success. In this method, nothing is good or bad. Every experience of failing or success leads to further learning. Feedback is a clear response to learn and to see themselves and the places they are standing in each phase of the learning process.
The current educational methodology based on formative assessment requests learners take responsibility for learning and share their knowledge and experiences with peers and educators for further knowledge.
